What You MUST Eat During Pregnancy

Advice from a Nutritional Therapist & Doula

Prenatal diet must haves Prenatal diet tips healthy pregnancy tips

How do you know what foods to eat during pregnancy? There are quite a few items you can’t have. Then you throw in cravings and aversions and you can be left feeling quite confused. As a pregnancy & postpartum coach, I love helping clients adjust their diets to be more nutrient-dense while also enjoying and indulging in their cravings. Here are some prenatal diet must-haves!

Nourishing foods OVER supplements— They aren’t the same. A vitamin is great to help but shouldn’t be in replacement for nourishing foods like healthy fats and protein. Focus on real whole foods and lots of color on your plate. Even a few sprigs of spinach in your eggs or a small handful of nuts into your smoothie. A little can go a long way.

Eating enough- Healthy pregnancy diet doesn’t mean dieting. You should not be dieting unless under strict instructions from your doctor. Stop focusing on how much you are gaining and focus on how many nourishing foods CAN you eat.

Fats and proteins- It is super easy to get sugars and carbs. You are probably doing just fine in that department. MOST women are not eating adequate amounts of fats and proteins, which will help you not gain as much weight and be able actually to feel good! Lowering carbs isn’t as important as eating more fats and proteins. (not processed protein products like plant-based/vegan products—I’m talking REAL food)

Herbal Tea- There are plenty of herbal teas that can be wonderfully nourishing for your pregnant body! Black, green, rooibos, red raspberry leaf, Nettle leaf, ginger, dandelion, and peppermint (not during postpartum if breastfeeding).

Gut health- fermented foods are great for your guts, pre, and probiotics, and making sure you are digesting fully. (more tips in my courses or 1:1 coaching)

What are your favorite nourishing foods during pregnancy??

Mine was bone broth, lemon/apple cider vinegar in water, soups, avocado, salmon, and freshly juiced cabbage/beet/celery/cucumber.
