Tidying up versus organizing

tidying up versus organizing how to keep the house picked up

A lot of people get very overwhelmed when their house turns into a disaster and they don’t know where to start. Then they procrastinate OR spend HOURS cleaning one room and feel defeated at the end of it.

There is a difference between tidying up and organizing. You have to decide which one you are doing and don’t do both at the same time. If you are tidying up and discover a drawer or closet that is a mess-that doesn’t mean you need to start organizing it. Finish tidying up and get to it later.

If you are going to organize, make sure you tidy up first. If you are struggling because certain items don’t have a “home” then simply put those items into a basket together and deal with it after you finish the initial tidy-up.

If you feel stuck while tidying up, a great way to think about it is by category. This works for tidying and organizing. Start with ONE category like clothes and finish that before moving on. Categories can be anything, paper, toiletries, shoes, a certain type of toy, etc… Teaching your kids to clean this way can be super helpful as well! Kids can get really overwhelmed when you tell them to clean up. Tell the to focus on one type of item and then move to another.

Once you have tidied up, you can begin organizing BUT take it in small sections and don’t get distracted. Most of us will start strong and then fizzle out. Setting up smaller goals will help. You may think that if you get everything out then you will HAVE to deal with it and it will be easier to get it done. HOWEVER, I’m aiming this conversation toward moms, and we all know that life happens and you may in fact not be able to finish. So keep the projects small.

Going little by little is the key and don’t forget to tidy up before you organize.
